THANK YOU to Caesars and Hope Southern Indiana

Thank You Caesars Hope.png

Mayor Gahan and the City of New Albany want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to Caesars Southern Indiana for donating over 1000 pounds of food to Hope Southern Indiana. The city assisted in connecting the two entities together, and Hope Southern Indiana will now be distributing the food through their numerous partners to get it to those in need.

Angie Graf, Director of Hope Southern Indiana, stated, “We would like to thank Brad Seigel and Caesars Southern Indiana for their generous donation to Hope Southern Indiana. Thank you to Mayor Gahan for connecting us. We know the city is working hard to fill in the gaps in services to help during Covid-19. We were blown away by the generous amount of food to help serve the people in need in New Albany. As we continue to love and serve our clients, we want you to know that you are a part of the solution to helping the vulnerable. This is just what the world needs – businesses, cities, and non-profits collaborating to make a difference!”

As the trucks kept unloading, the scales showed the amount of food donated was 822.65 pounds of produce, 120 pounds of bread, 65 pounds of meat, 50 pounds of dairy, for a total of 1057.65 pounds of food donated by Mr. Seigel and Caesars Southern Indiana.

Thanks again to both Caesars Southern Indiana for their generous donation and Hope Southern Indiana for facilitating getting the food to those in need.

Resources and Help for Small Businesses

Mayor Gahan also visited numerous restaurants, bars, and shops in New Albany over the past few days to offer city support and keep lines of communication open.

Many New Albany restaurants are transitioning to carry out/curbside pickup models, and we encourage you to support local restaurants during this time of need. Please ensure that you call ahead to restaurants to place your order, and then call when you arrive.

The city understands that this pandemic can cause serious financial strain on our local businesses, employees, and families.

NA Restaurants Adapt to Curbside Pickup_Delivery.png

To better facilitate curbside and carry out orders, the City of New Albany took action and approved curbside parking for local restaurants in front of their businesses. New “Curbside Service Parking Spaces” will become available throughout downtown during this emergency and signs are being created and placed as soon as they are fabricated.

“We will continue to work and help our local businesses through this difficult time,” stated Mayor Jeff Gahan.

A Message From Mayor Gahan Regarding Coronavirus

A Message From Mayor Gahan Regarding COVID19.png

Hello New Albany.

I wanted to take a few minutes to update you on the information we have regarding the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, and the steps we are taking to protect residents’ health and safety.

Yesterday, I ordered our parks facilities closed for at least the next two weeks in order to combat the spread of COVID-19. Yesterday evening, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidelines that recommend gatherings of 50 or more be suspended for the next eight weeks.

Due to this, we are reducing on-site staffing levels for city staff, and encouraging certain city workers to work from home. However, our public safety teams remain at full staffing, and we are working diligently to bring more police and firefighters on staff each shift to provide assistance.

Many of you have reached out to our office with concerns, so I wanted to address a few of the most common concerns that we have received.

The most common question that we have received is regarding testing for the Coronavirus. I have sent a letter to our local health department, our state health department, and our governor’s office demanding information regarding our State’s capacity to test for the Coronavirus.

Experts are telling us that without testing, our only other option remains social distancing, which is what I am encouraging our residents to do if possible.

If you can work from home during this pandemic, you should.

I understand the financial and emotional strain that this can put on people. I understand that many residents live paycheck to paycheck, and have real concerns about their financial status during this crisis. And that is why I am urging our state and federal leaders to enact emergency legislation to protect people during these uncertain times.

We have to ensure that people who want to be tested can be tested, and those that need to stay home are not suffering a devastating financial loss. I have been and will continue calling on our state and federal leaders to provide the assistance that many of us need.

As we receive more information, we will continue to update the public as best we can with the most current and accurate information. We have set up a website to host updates, and I encourage residents to visit it. It can be found at newalbanycityhall.com/covid19

Please continue to practice best hygiene practices during this time. Wash your hands, cover your coughs and sneezes, and practice social distancing.

If everyone works as a community and does their part, we will get through this together.

Mayor Gahan Announces Closure of Parks to Combat Coronavirus

Parks Close to Combat Coronavirus.png

For the next 14 days, New Albany city parks facilities will be closed to the public for all programming, rentals, and previously approved and permitted events.  This action is being directed to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Effective tomorrow (Mar 16th) at 6am, all city parks facilities and shelters will be closed for the next two weeks (March 31st).  National health experts encourage social separation and distancing.  Closing of these city park facilities and shelters in combination with New Albany Floyd County School Corporation’s spring break will hopefully contain the virus and slow its spread. The City of New Albany has one of the most robust parks programming in the metro area.  Any group that has reserved and paid in advance for park reservations, please contact the parks department for a full refund or rescheduling of your event.

Programs involving the New Albany Housing Authority as it relates to homework camp and food distribution will remain as scheduled.

Golf courses will remain open at this time, but indoor rental of the facilities will be closed.

It is encouraged to continue to use the outdoor areas of city parks, but it is advised to not congregate and follow public health guidelines as it relates to social spacing.

City operations will remain at full staffing with regular working hours until further notice.

Officials understand that these additional precautions will be difficult and inconvenient but social spacing is the only effective measure to combat the virus according to national health experts.

Please stay tuned for more information concerning the COVID-19 virus and any additional steps the city of New Albany will be taking to minimize the spread of the virus. Thank you in advance for your understanding and help to keep New Albany healthy and strong.
